Jesus Pulido

Jesus Pulido holds a Ph.D. in architecture and has taught in Spain and Chile before joining the University of Tokyo in 2019. He is a Project Assistant Professor at the Center for Global Education (GlobE), where he teaches scientific writing and global liberal arts courses on sustainability in architecture and urban planning. His research interests include team-based learning (TBL) to scaffold the learning process, create effective teams, and promote students’ individual accountability to their peers.

Abstract

This presentation summarizes my first experience presenting at the 2025 PANSIG conference. First, I will provide an overview of PANSIG, a conference that welcomes diverse pedagogical approaches to language education. In the second part, I will delve into my contribution to the conference, which explored how Team-Based Learning (TBL) can help build team cohesion, foster accountability, and stimulate discussion in courses taught in English to a mixed audience of Japanese and foreign students. Specifically, I will explain how backward syllabus design, one of the pillars of TBL, helped me create group activities for my Global Liberal Arts course, “Sustainability in Japanese Architecture”. This presentation will be helpful for instructors teaching discussion-based courses in which students must not only collaborate but also form cohesive and effective teams to solve complex problems.
