Abstract
In this talk I will share what I learned at the JALTCALL 2025 conference, where AI’s transformative impact on language teaching emerged as the dominant theme. I will discuss practical approaches for incorporating AI into language classrooms, including innovative uses of ChatGPT for corpus-based learning, strategies for guiding students in AI-assisted writing through critical digital literacy, and the development of AI disclosure frameworks for both students and teachers. Drawing from plenary speakers and presentations, I found that technological capability doesn’t equal pedagogical value, and that teacher transparency and professional development are essential as institutional policies struggle to keep pace with AI advancement. The talk wraps up with plans for implementing what I learned at UTokyo, potentially contributing to the development of student training modules on ethical AI use and program-wide policy development.
