UTokyo Global FD Seminar- Prof. Kimberly Hutchings
10:30 - 12:00
Komaba Campus, The University of Tokyo
The Dynamics of Classroom Interaction
This seminar introduces the idea of “emotional intelligence” as key to student learning (Alan Mortiboys, Teaching with Emotional Intelligence, Routledge, 2005). It analyses the different ways in which teachers can adapt their teaching style to take account of the role of emotion in learning (and their own teaching) and how using emotional intelligence helps to deal with difficult dynamics in the classroom between student and teacher, as well as between students in the context of a variety of teaching and feedback activities. The seminar convenor will draw on her own experience to illustrate ways in which using emotional intelligence makes it easier to manage disparities of background and ability in large classes, and, in particular, to engage students who find it difficult to participate fully in the class.
